Overview

Latest update: October 31, 2007

By Anne-Marie van Ginneken

A little excited we drove to Blandas. After the great results from last month, the expectations for this weekend project were extremely high. The low temperatures and rain that bothered us the last hours luckily didn’t change the circumstances in the cave. When JP and I walked to the cave on Thursday evening to check the water level and visibility, it looked even better than the month before. The perfect start for our last Vis-project of this year.

Beautiful scenery at Source de Vis

Day 1 - Setup

Due to the low temperatures (3 degrees centigrade), most people decided to stay in a nearby hotel. Around 8:00h in the morning, after having a relaxed breakfast, we drove to the camp site to find it almost empty. Several people had arrived during the night but only Jörg and Torsten proved brave enough to camp. We found Wido a little higher on the hill, sleeping in his car and Hervé arrived a little later. After Reinhard’s briefing we started taking the gear to the cave.

The sequence from our last project worked extremely well and was used again this time. Around 11:00h, all equipment needed for the push dive was brought into in the cave and Markus and Reinhard started preparing their gear. The rest of us walked back for lunch and continued with the equipment needed for the support dives that day.

Around 17:00h Jörg and JP had finished their setup dive and the group had a “moon light”dinner at the cave.

Day 2 - Push Dive

Expecting a long dive time, we started the day early. Ralph and Jasmine joined the group when we walked to the cave and around 9:00h Markus and Reinhard were ready to do the last checks and descend for their dive.

Four hours later the second support team with Wido and Stephan met the divers in the cave shaft. The first gear was brought to the surface together with a note from Markus stating “everything OK” and “added 400m of line”. Wido and Stephan stayed in the water to check the push divers on a regular basis and help them out of the rebreather sets, while the rest of the group started taking the gear back to the cars.

When Markus and Reinhard left the water a little after 4 o’clock in the afternoon, most of the gear was taken out, leaving only the rebreather sets, oxygen and heating tubes. About one hour later, also these were back into the cars. The perfect result of this Vis-project was celebrated with a dinner in Blandas.
